In an effort to find the best places to take everyone when they come to visit us here in Florida, Greg and I decided to check out Sanibel/Captiva Island today. The locals told us it was a great place to visit, so we headed out there at 10am this morning. Sanibel is about 45 minutes from out house, which is mostly driving through Fort Myers down the famous McGregor Avenue which happens to be one of my most favorite drives; I could drive up and down that street all day long. The island is small and quaint with little gift shops that line the main drag which is Periwinkle. It takes about 45 minutes to drive the length of the island at 35 mph. Greg and I saw some of the most beautiful mansions I think either of us has seen. The streets are line with foliage and palm trees and you can catch glimpses of the ocean with almost every turn. The beaches are great for shelling, there are plenty of them. We also got to watch the locals do some fishing off of the pier. One kid even caught a mini hammer head shark. I tried to get a picture of it but I was too slow getting the camera out. There is a bike path that travels almost the whole length of the island right past the natural wildlife refuge.
We stopped and had lunch at the Island Cow restaurant where of course I had to try the grouper fish tacos and Greg has the most festive chicken sandwich with mangos, cilantro and chipotle seasoning. Definitely going back there!
